Last week we shared the madness that is 24 hour Mountain Biking and introduced Nigel and Donna who together form Team No Idea. Don’t be fooled by their Battenburg themed cycling tops and the humble downplaying of their skills, this Yorkshire duo are phenomenal athletes and wizards on bikes, to whom sleep is nothing more than an optional extra.
Competing far from home in the sweltering heat of the Italian Riviera, this was not their comfort zone but you wouldn’t of known it from the results. Nigel completed an incredible 33, 7 miles laps in the 24 hours, placing him in second place in the 35-39 age category and only 1 lap off gold. What’s just as impressive though is the incredible consistency with which he rode, with his 33rd lap only taking ten minutes longer than his first. He wasn’t the only member of Team No Idea putting on a masterclass either with Donna finishing just outside the podium in fourth place and the second Brit overall with 22 laps. Next years championships will be held on the pairs favourite course - Fort William, could 2018 see gold?
Back in Blighty and in the no less glamorous location of the Caernarfon, North Wales. Jen Wood was busy reminding the world that she is one of best female climbers in Britain and a real contender for an Olympic spot. Which she did in style dominating the competition from the very start; going unbeaten all day and leading from the first event to the final. This leaves the Mancunian as both Welsh Climbing Champion and overall leader of the British Lead Climbing Championships (Climbing with ropes). With only one more round to go in the British Champs Jen is in the enviable position of having the highest possible score of 200 points and improving every week - bring on the final!
